Buying is easy…selling not so easy
Thu Aug 22, 2024 11:22 am
Hi all
Just thought I’d start a discussion on this topic. I find that collecting or stacking is easy, provided you have the cash of course. I find that the challenge comes when you want to sell some coins/bars. Dealers will offer spot or a little more or a little less. And then there are the hazards (such as scammers and the postal service) of selling via forums and eBay.
Cash, stocks, bonds, crypto have much easier liquidity. But I like the diversity metals offer, and the feel of a coin in my hand. But converting to cash (at an acceptable value) when needed is not easy.
Thoughts?

I've never bought with a view to selling, but I have fallen out of love with a few odds and sods. No joy in selling the posh stuff as yet, but I did manage to sell some more bread-and-butter silver without making a loss. Mind you, I didn't gain anything either.

My interest is only the joy of the coins I buy that show high relief design. The people around me have no interest in the
coins. I can't even get one of them to go to a coin show. When I am gone they will most likely dump them all.

Have you spoken to say dealers?
Selling on this forum should be straightforward, I hope.
Selling on ebay , the buyer has more protection these days.
Always sell with special delivery! It's just not worth taking a risk.
There is a art to Selling like taking photos as you package it and then no one can bs you.

I sold some stuff on Ebay a little over a year ago with no issues. The idea was to time Ebay sales to give a boost of a few hundred quid to monthly payday amounts and pay off the credit card over 3-4 months which I managed to do. I did everything as an auction starting at 99p and only 2 items sold with me making a loss on them. Probably sold about 40 items and nothing got lost in the post and nobody tried to scam me, not sure if I was just lucky.

Rod
I bought and sold many things back in the year 2000 on E-Bay. I bought and sold stereo equipment, camera and lens and coins.
Never made a profit on old things. It was a place back then to dump things. When they started to increase their prices
I gave up. I have their credit card I don't use it because they did not like when would pay off the item before the credit
charge. They kept changing the agreement.

I hardly ever sell on eBay any more.
