Centaur Silver Coin
Sun Nov 24, 2024 12:21 am
Hello All
Went to a coin show today here in Florida bought a few coins. Their were a few that I had to pass on I did not bring a lot
of money with me. Picked up these two coins 1oz. silver that have high relief that I don't know anything about them. Some one here may
be able to find out more about them. Here are photos of them. The back is the same on them.

Hi @AVG , glad you're out there enjoying the fairs.
These two rounds are western zodiac rounds, which makes something of a change from the Chinese lunar coins that are everywhere.
The first (the centaur) is Sagittarius, the archer. The main image is surrounded by a band showing all the symbols for the twelve signs of the zodiac, with the sign for Sagittarius slightly raised. The inner band shows the astronomical sign for the planet Jupiter (it looks a bit like a number four), which rules Sagittarius.
The second is Taurus, the bull, with a similar band of symbols. This time the symbol for Taurus is raised to highlight it. The inner band is a bit odd. I can't make out what the signs in groups of three are, but the other sign (looks like the Taurus symbol) is nothing like the astronomical sign for Venus, which rules Taurus. It looks more like the sign for Mercury, but without the lower pendant cross. I can't really comment further.
There doesn't appear to be anything to identify the mint, but the US has an awful lot of private mints and they don't always put their names on their output.
You got two very interesting rounds there.

My pleasure @AVG . The back looks to be a depiction of the Sun and Moon - which you've doubtless already worked out.
I also see that there looks to be a little crown towards the bottom on the right hand side. Maybe a mint mark? A very quick Google search showed that there was a Crown Mint, which ceased trading under less than auspicious circumstances a couple of years ago. They also seem to be abbreviated as TCM , which I might just take exception to. Nowt to do with me anyway.

These are super cool and attractive. I can see why you went for them. They are stunning in design and something I had not seen for a while. or at least I think I haven't
