Secret Santa 2021 ENTER HERE

Christmas is coming, and as you will be aware following last week’s post and vote, and today’s post by Admin, the idea of running a Secret Santa for the Forum has been floated. Despite the rather low turnout on the vote, it’s going ahead. In the spirit of the season, as occasionally happens, inspiration struck like a lead-weighted sock, and the following describes the process:

'Twas the month before Christmas and all through the forum
We were trying to think of a way not to bore ‘em
The ultimate scheme then came in at a canter
We know, let’s help out our old friend Uncle Santa

The elves were asleep so we had to think fast
To work up a plan before Christmas was past
The times for the post gave us cause to consider
Whether the Sleigh could be open to bidders

But the thought of Ace Bullion trying to control
Eight reindeer and sleigh from the icy North Pole
Caused a hasty rethink, and though maybe misguided
We’re keeping things simple. Here’s what we’ve decided:

Back to prose.
1. The Secret Santa is open to all members. All members who would like to take part must reply to this post by 31st October - next Sunday – by midnight London
      time.
2. Gifts are to be within the range of £25 to £60 (or € or $ equivalent), or one ounce of silver. [See below]  Don’t go mad, this is meant to be fun!
3. When the list of participants has closed, either Admin or I will match them up and tell each participant both who their Santa is and who their victim/recipient is. The Santas will then PM their
       recipients to get address details. Obviously, everybody must be happy to disclose their names and addresses to their Santa. Equally obviously, that information
        must not go any further.
4. Gifts to be posted in time to be received before Christmas.
5. Following the distribution of gifts, after Christmas, all participants are to post saying what they got, but the name of their Santa remains secret. A photo would be
      nice but if, like me, you can’t do that, then a description will be fine.
6. Ho! Ho! Ho!

Sounds like a nice way of enjoying Christmas with our forum pals, especially for members who happen to live alone, and have no family to celebrate with, and the only thing to open on the festive day is a packet of tea bags? still it could be worse I suppose?

Hi Lucky - probably a question more for me, but I'm sure Admin will add anything I miss.

There is no specific section along the lines you mention. Neither Jonrms nor I have terrestrial address details of members, and because of the Data Protection rules only the individual can consent to their details being disclosed. Given that we are all remote from each other, the method I chose is the simplest way of getting all the gifts sent out. Obviously, the consent will be limited to the one-time gift giving, but anyone who doesn't want their address to be revealed to anyone can't participate. I can't think of any way to operate a Secret Santa where gifts have to be posted that doesn't involve addresses being disclosed.

When the (extended) period is up I will match Santas and recipients by the time-honoured method of drawing names - first the Santa then the recipient - from two 'tins' each containing all the names. Hopefully I won't have one left over. I'll then PM the Santas and tell them who they are giving to, and it will then be up to the Santas to get details from their partner. In fact, I will PM everyone to let them know who their Santa is too, given that the secrecy element will evaporate as soon as address details are requested.

Does that make sense?

Even for one as thick as myself, and my extreme slowness in processing relevant information, a comprehensive answer to my enquiry, which I understood completely!
