Secret Santa Extension Empty Secret Santa Extension

Mon Nov 01, 2021 11:16 am
Hello Everybody
Following a long consideration, Admin and I have decided that we should give an extension of time for entries into the Secret Santa. The second Forum giveaway is on Thursday, so we thought that a week from then was a good date to pick. So, the new cut off is Midnight London time on 11th November. After that I will match up the Santas and recipients* and let everybody know. By that weekend, it will be all systems go.
TCM

* There will also be a (very) small prize to anyone who can think up the best punchier alternative word for 'recipients'. My decision is final, and I make no pretence at being fair.

As many as you can manage, but bear in mind I am looking for something less cumbersome that 'recipient', so on present form you're unlikely to be successful. I don't much like 'donee' either, and 'giftee' is an abomination. Anybody using the term 'gifted' in a sentence such as 'X was gifted to Y' deserves all they get.

I think you are being somewhat pedantic, but I will give it another go.
This time you will have to work out what my submission means?

"FOB"

Good luck 🤞

It's usually 'Free on Board', but you no doubt have something more esoteric in mind.

Otherwise, CBA.

Do you require the full meaning before I claim my very small prize?

What prize? It's going to be awarded for the best punchier alternative word - singular - for 'recipients'. So far you've submitted crossword clues. No banana for you either.

Ah, I would never have guessed - I thought it was a reference to M&S St. Michael.
Have you any idea what gji25 is on about?

if I had to chose words to replace "recipients" I would go with either: legatee or Heir personally

I'm not 100%, but if you change the 1st 2 letters to just 1 different letter, of the second word???   affraid

That's certainly punchier, but the words denote inheritance under a will rather than a gift between living people - which I hope the Secret Santa will be!

I'm coming round to the view that there isn't really any good alternative.

If I read you aright, that isn't very nice at all. No wonder he hasn't explained himself.

there is certainly a lack of synonymous words to replace "recipient" with, many seem to fall outside of the criteria you are asking for unfortunately. alas I tip my hat out of that competition lol having looked extensively for a valid replacement, I have run out of potentials that havent already been attempted Razz although I was leaning towards Philanthropy\philanthropist and its synonyms and acronyms to find an alternative but without it sounding formal or anything, I ran into a dead end lol

Wow CGH! That response deserves a special trophy, possibly the Governor General's Award. Let me think about that.
So far as the silly competition is concerned, I think I'll close it now as nobody - not even Professor Google - has managed to come up with anything.
