Tropical Fish Hobby Empty Tropical Fish Hobby

Hello All
This is a good hobby when you want to take your mind off of things that may bother you. Angel fish are some of the most
colorful fish to raise. I had four that I bought last year which were no bigger than one inch. Two of them are male and female.
I found you can't have other fish with them when they have a nest they will kill other fish. They are now over five inches tall and made a nest last month with over one hundred babies. Here is a photo of one .

He, or she, is a beauty @AVG : but It seems they aren't as angelic as all that!
I find the same with my plants. I can lose myself for hours at a time in th greenhouse.

I find watching fish tanks is very relaxing.  You can just zone out.  I also like watching test cricket for the same reason.

For such a pretty fish, they are totally evil. Mine now live with tiger barbs, big clown loaches and two platies which are very fast to get away from him

I was unable to save the babies the last time they had them. I am going to see this time I have a small plastic tank with
an air filter and also a heater. I will see I can catch them. I have a twenty gallon tank with Betta's so i can't put them in that tank.

Yes my barbs eat everything they are 4 old so they are getting elderly now
When I was a kid I had a small tank I threw everything in together and I had sail fin mollies that started to breed so I needed a new tank just for them in. so I bought one for £10. Only problem was that it had a one eye piranha in it so I took it home the seller forgot to tell me that The thermostat wasn't very good so I cooked him that night poor little bugger and the mollies ate its babies

They are pretty Assassin's. I really like shark's we brought 3 red tails and lost them in a week. Our water quality had a problem. It took along time to sort it, had it perfect then put in a new rock display and it went down hill again. New plant went in today and test shows it's getting better so fingers crossed

You can keep the water right by using this "Stability" I add this every month to both tanks. Keeps the water balance right.
It is a job to keep up with the hobby.

Yes it's a full time job luckily it's more my husbands pets I just choose the fish. They seem to be a lot of time needed for them. When I had tanks underground filters were the thing when he put this together four years ago I asked were it was and was shown a external huge filter. He wasn't impressed and I said what the earth is that thing?

I built Plastic tanks with under gravel filters up to 55 gallons back in 1980 for salt water fish. The filter I made from flu. light grid
and window screening and drilled a hole in the bottom of the tank and the filter was a canister type which was placed under the tank.
Fish were cheap back then and I was a young 50 years old Smile .

They look great.
Here is a photo of the filter system I made for the 20 gal. tank and the stand I built for the tank. The tank has three sections
to keep the Betta's apart so they don't kill each other Smile .

I had around ten in the last two years all males. I have three in the 20 gallon tank right now. They only last around two years if you keep them in a large tank may be longer. Here are some photo's.

They are very pretty, amazing colours. My local shop keep them in the smallest tanks and they have got very pricey. When you put the females beside them they look like a different breed
